What the Experts Say II: Video Games and Teenage Behavior
Advances in Social Sciences Research Journal explored the different effects of gaming on children’s mental health and behavior. It is reported that modern children, between the ages of 12 to 17, spend an average of 7 hours on their mobile devices, which includes the time spent of gaming.
Today, gaming addiction is classified as a mental disorder, and it is called Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD). Long period of time spent on mobile devices and games, results in increased need for isolation in young adults. For example, it is reported that children with shy personalities develop anti-social behavior as they grow up. Aside from that, children who play violent games are known to develop aggressive tendencies and hostile behavior. When spending long hours on gaming, children are known to fall into depression due to constant social isolation.
However, playing computer games, even violent ones such as “Grand Theft Auto”, is also said to develop some beneficial skills in children, such as better visual processing and improved attention control. Therefore, gaming can have both positive and negative effects on child development, depending on the type of games played and the child’s personality characteristics.
