Current Event I: Metaverse and Teenage Mental Health
Our world is constantly changing and developing in different ways, all with the help of the internet and modern technology. More and more social media platforms are created, various online games, and even virtual or crypto currencies such as Bitcoin. So many aspects of everyday life are being moved online.
One of the latest inventions or technological advancements, is the Metaverse. It became one of the hottest topics of the 21st century, for reasons such as the announcements made by Facebook CEO, that he is rebranding his company to Meta, and increased popularity of cryptocurrencies and NFTs. Moreover, lots of people discovered the opportunity of working online, without the need of their physical presence in the offices.
So, a Metaverse, is an alternative world or virtual reality, where people can perform their everyday tasks, just as they do in the real world. The Metaverse will allow people to meet, work, trade, and travel all through different online platforms. The Metaverse world is built on three important concepts, which are
Virtual Reality interface, digital ownership, an online avatar which represent real people.
Without proper rules and measures to control and moderate Metaverse, such drastic shift to virtual life or existence can negatively impact the mental health of adolescents. The excessive use of computers or electronic devices, which are required to enter the Metaverse, can lead many teenagers to develop addiction to such virtual realities.
Addictions can further lead to or worsen the symptoms of existing depression or anxiety among teens. The Metaverse is said to be available 24/7, which can result in disrupted sleeping schedule of many children. Virtual Reality poses a risk for becoming an even bigger place for cyberbullying, and parents would not be able to control whoever their children interact with in an alternative universe. Young children, can be very perceptive, and such virtual interactions can expose them to harmful environments and dangerous people, hidden behind “friendly” avatars. Therefore, we must really think about “how to integrate Metaverse and other VR platforms in the safest way for our children and young adults?”.
